How to Host a Tea Tasting Flight at Home

How to Host a Tea Tasting Flight at Home

Wine flights and beer flights get all the attention, but a tea flight might be the coziest way to gather friends this fall. A flight lets everyone taste several teas side by side, compare what they notice, and find a new favorite. Nobody needs to be a tea expert to have fun with it. All you need is a few good teas, some small cups, and a little curiosity.

Here is everything you need to host your own tasting at home, from choosing your teas to pairing snacks and honey, plus a simple scoring card your guests can use as they sip.

What You'll Need

You don't need fancy equipment to host a tea flight. Gather these basics before your guests arrive:

  • Three to five teas, arranged from lightest to boldest

  • A kettle, ideally one with temperature control

  • A teapot or infuser for each tea

  • Small tasting cups, about two to three ounces per pour

  • A pitcher of water and plain crackers to cleanse the palate between teas

  • A few creamed honeys for stirring and spreading

  • A scoring card and pen for each guest

Plan for about four to eight guests and roughly 90 minutes. That leaves time to steep, sip, snack, and talk about each tea without rushing.

Build Your Flight: Five Sipping Streams Favorites

The golden rule of any tasting flight is to go from light to bold. Starting with delicate flavors keeps your palate fresh, so you can still pick up subtle notes before the stronger teas arrive. Here is a five-tea flight built from some of our best sellers.

1. Arctic Bliss

Start with a taste of Alaska. Arctic Bliss is our signature blend made with fireweed and low-bush cranberry, bright and gently fruity with a floral lift. It's a lovely, easygoing opener that gets everyone talking.

Honey pairing: Fireweed Creamed Honey. The two share fireweed, so the honey deepens the blend's natural sweetness without covering it up.

Snack pairing: Cranberry orange scones or shortbread cookies.

2. Sweet Matcha

Next, shift to something vibrant. Sweet Matcha brings the earthy, grassy character of Japanese matcha with a gentle sweetness that makes it approachable for first-timers. Whisk or stir it well so it's smooth and frothy before pouring.

Honey pairing: Matcha Creamed Honey, for a double dose of matcha flavor.

Snack pairing: Crisp apple slices drizzled with Matcha Creamed Honey. The tart apple and earthy matcha balance each other beautifully.

3. 1,000 Mile Tea

Now for our most famous blend. Named after the Yukon Quest sled dog race, 1,000 Mile Tea combines black and white teas for a malty, slightly sweet cup with real staying power. Ask your guests to notice how the body feels fuller than the first two teas.

Honey pairing: Earl Grey Creamed Honey, our most popular flavor. Its soft bergamot notes add a gentle citrus lift to the malty base.

Snack pairing: Sharp cheddar and whole grain crackers, or toast spread with a thin layer of creamed honey.

4. Masala Chai

As the flight builds, bring in the warmth of fall. Our Masala Chai is bold and spicy, with the kind of aroma that fills the whole room. Try tasting it plain first, then with a splash of milk, and have guests compare the difference.

Honey pairing: Pumpkin Spice Creamed Honey (limited edition). It's made to complement spiced teas, and together they taste like autumn in a cup.

Snack pairing: Gingersnaps or a slice of pumpkin bread.

5. Chocolate Passion

End on something sweet. Chocolate Passion is a caffeine-free indulgence, so it's a perfect evening finish that won't keep anyone up late. Think of it as dessert in a teacup.

Honey pairing: Pumpkin Spice Creamed Honey again, or Fireweed Creamed Honey for a simpler sweetness.

Snack pairing: A small scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with a spoonful of Pumpkin Spice Creamed Honey. It tastes just like pumpkin pie.

Want a smaller flight? Pick three teas: Arctic Bliss, 1,000 Mile Tea, and Masala Chai. That gives you a light, a medium, and a bold cup, which is all you need for a great comparison.

How to Steep for a Tasting

Consistency is what makes a flight work. Steep every tea the same way, so guests are comparing the teas themselves rather than differences in preparation.

  • Use about one teaspoon of loose leaf tea for every six to eight ounces of water.

  • Follow the steeping temperature and time on each pouch. Green teas and matcha prefer cooler water, while black teas, chai, and herbal blends can handle water closer to boiling.

  • Steep one tea at a time and serve it right away while it's hot.

  • Pour small tastes, about two to three ounces per guest, so everyone has room for all five.

  • Taste each tea plain first, then try it with its honey pairing.

Your Tea Tasting Scoring Card

Hand each guest a card like this one. Score each category from 1 to 5 and jot down any notes.

Tea

Aroma

Color

Body

Flavor

Finish

Notes

Arctic Bliss

Sweet Matcha

1,000 Mile Tea

Masala Chai

Chocolate Passion

What each category means:

  • Aroma: Smell the cup before sipping. Is it floral, fruity, earthy, spicy, or sweet?

  • Color: Hold the cup up to the light. Pale gold, bright green, deep amber?

  • Body: How does it feel in your mouth? Light and crisp, or rich and full?

  • Flavor: What do you taste first, and does it change as you sip?

  • Finish: What lingers after you swallow, and for how long?

At the bottom of the card, add two final questions: "My favorite tea tonight was ___" and "My favorite honey pairing was ___." Tallying the answers at the end makes a fun way to crown the group's winner.

Tips for a Great Tasting

  • Cleanse between cups. A sip of water and a plain cracker resets your taste buds before the next tea.

  • Keep it relaxed. There are no wrong answers. One guest might taste cranberry while another tastes honey, and both are right.

  • Share the stories. Every tea has one, from Alaska's fireweed fields to the 1,000-mile trail. Sharing them makes the tasting feel special.
