As much joy as this time of year brings, the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can knock us out of our routine and cause unnecessary anxiety as we rush from one event to the next.
Our sleep schedule is completely off, we indulge in a lot of foods and drinks that we don’t typically consume, and we tend to burden ourselves with finding the most perfect gifts for those who are important to us.
Quite frankly – we need a reset.
Here are 3 steps that you can implement today so that you can maintain your healthy habits, relieve stress, and be fully present with your loved ones during this holiday season.
Step 1: Listen To Music
But don’t just listen to your typical music that you scream in the car (unless that’s relaxing for you… then by all means keep it up!)
Be intentional about listening to calming, soothing music. This can be classic symphonies, nature sounds, or truly anything that makes you slow down and breathe.
This practice has a positive effect on our minds and bodies. It has been proven to lower your blood pressure and put you in a more calm and cohesive state of mind.
Step 2: Drink Tea
Studies have shown that consuming high levels of caffeine through coffee or energy drinks can lead to spikes in your blood pressure. These spikes can oftentimes cause feelings of anxiety and stress throughout your day.
This season, try switching out your highly caffeinated beverages for a green tea or calming herbal tea such as chamomile lavender tea. Each of these naturally caffeinated alternatives is rich in antioxidants and amino acids that are proven to have calming effects on your nervous system.
Step 3: Maintain Your Regular Exercise Routine
It’s important to be intentional about moving your body 2-3 times a day. This can be as simple as going for a walk around the block or parking in the back of the grocery store parking lot to get that extra movement in before baking your holiday treats.
Consistent exercises – big or small – will release endorphins and improve your mood almost instantly. Brisk walks after large meals can also aid your digestive system in breaking down and using the foods that you don’t typically eat to fuel your body.
Remember, the holiday season is meant to bring joy and peace to you and your loved ones. Take time for yourself for intentional self-care so that you are well-rested and refueled for all of your festivities!
